Court Sentenced Six Members of the Same Family to Life Imprisonment.
The High Court in Iganga District sentenced six members of the same family to life imprisonment for murder. Court presided over by Hon. Lady Justice Flavia Sennoga on Monday October 28, 2013 heard that the family murdered a prominent gentleman, Mr. George Isabirye, in 2009 following a dispute over a seven-acre piece of land.
Prosecution told court that the convicts, all residents of Ibulanku Sub-county, hacked Isabirye to death on the night of July 21, 2009 in Mifumi valley as he was returning to his home in Mawanga village. Court heard that the attack occurred a week after Isabirye had won a land suit he had filed before the Iganga Chief Magistrate’s Court against Muhammed Sundya.
While passing judgment, Hon. Lady Justice Sennoga said prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the six participated in the murder. State lawyer Ms. Lydia Katami had asked court to give them a death sentence to serve as a deterrent, saying they planned the murder so that they can take over the land. But the defense lawyer, Mr Ronald Kasisa, asked for lenience, saying his clients had reformed during the four years on remand.
